Voltage in Maldives, Plugs and Outlets

Whenever you are traveling internationally to the Maldives you should always check the voltage and outlets of your vacation destination. The last thing you want is to arrive at your hotel and find out all of your electronic devices are either the wrong voltage or have the wrong plug. It is common to find a variety of plugs and receptacles in the Maldives so always check with your resort before purchasing adapters.

You will likely find the European CEE 7/16 Europlug Type C, the British BS-1363 Type G, and the Indian BS-546 Type D. The best thing to do is buy an adapter for each type so that you have them. Keep in mind, however, that the Maldives current is 220-240 volts. If your appliances run at this voltage all you will need are adapters and you can plug them in and they will work Holiday Inn Kandooma

If your appliances run at 110-120 volts, and most American and Canadian appliances do, then you will need a step-down transformer to convert the voltage as well as the adapter. If you aren’t sure what voltage your appliances run on just check the label, battery brick, or owner’s manual and it will tell you. Please keep in mind that while an AC plug adapter will allow you to plug your appliances in it will not convert voltage. Doing this will most likely result in damage to your electrical appliances and very well may ruin them.

17th SAARC Summit – Building Bridges at Addu city

The countdown to the 17th SAARC Summit is on and it will take place on November 10, 2011 at Addu City, Maldives. The theme of the summit is “Building Bridges” and one of its goals is to improve communication among member countries. Part of the goal of the summit is to not only enhance communication, but also to determine the various problems affecting each member country as well as all of the countries collectively.

The Summit will provide a platform for members and stakeholders to communicate, address one another, and learn from one another. The Summit will be held in Addu City and Fuvamulah.There will be heads of state as well as ministers from various countries in attendance. The Maldives is putting the finishing touches on the plans for the Summit and awaits a successful event.

Maldives National University

The Maldives have long been known as a luxurious vacation destination, however they are developing significantly in the educational sector as well.

The Maldives National University – MNU, was inaugurated in early 2011 and is the nation’s first university. The university was formed by collaborating and upgrading all the faculties of the then Maldives College of Higher Education. MNU is now the country’s leading institution that grants higher education degrees, which range from management, engineering, education, health sciences, tourism, among others. There are short term courses that have an enrollment of around 2,000 students while long term degree programs have an enrollment of about 4,000 students.

Diving in the Maldives

While people from all over the world are drawn to the beauty of the fauna and beaches of the Maldives, it is the wonders that lie beneath the sea that attracts  thousands of people every year  to go scuba diving in the Maldives. Geographically, the Maldives stretch almost 500 miles in a north-south direction just north of the equator and south-west of Sri Lanka.

The natural beauty of the Maldives Holidays is a direct result of the unusual geological process that has occurred over millions of years in the region.  The islands were born from the emergence of  a submerged mountain range and were quickly  surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. The Maldives also experience two monsoon seasons, which are split into the Northeast and the Southwest monsoons. The Northeast monsoon occurs  December until March and brings with it drier weather, while  the Southwest monsoon results in wetter weather during May to November.

Diving in the Maldives undoubtedly offers one of the greatest underwater experiences in the world. Beautiful corals are accompanied by a huge range of underwater wildlife, with large pelagics mixing easily with a variety of tropical fish. Such a large variety of diving opportunities ensures that  novices and experienced divers will quickly feel at home in the Maldives.

The majority of dives sites in the Maldives tend to be found in the shallower reefs surrounding the islands, however some of the best diving can be found in the multitude of channels that are created by the Maldives' unique geological formations.

 An increasing number of dive operators are offering people the opportunity to dive in the less accessible sites further away from the Maldives' shores with live-aboard diving. The majority of the live-aboards in the Maldives operate from the capital in Male. There are a large number of dive operators in the Maldives, the majority of which are affiliated with the island resorts. On the whole, they tend to be well equipped with a good knowledge of the atolls (ring -shaped) local dive sites and reefs. As a result, live-aboard diving in the Maldives is rapidly becoming a thriving industry.

International Art Camp ends with exhibition

MALE, March 20 (HNS) - The combined art camp, featuring several renowned Indian and local artists, entitled ‘International Artists Camp 2011’, which was held in Addu City from March 9-22, drew to an apt conclusion when the work created during this period was exhibited at the National Museum today.

The exhibition was declared open by the Home Minister, Hassan Afeef, in the presence of other distinguished guests such as the Minster of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mariyam Zulfa, and the assembled artists.

The artists camp was the brainchild of the United Artists of Maldives (UAM), a body comprising leading figures in the Maldivian arts circle, all of whom succeeded in attracting their equally esteemed Indian counterparts to the secluded and artistically stimulating island of Addu.

The Indian artists that converged on the island were Chaman Sharma, Sadhana Sangar, Gurdheep Singh Dhiman, Saurabh Narang and Hemali Bhutta.

Speaking to Haveeru ahead of the camp, maldives holidays the Exhibition and Project Officer of the National Art Gallery, Ahmed Naeem, said that this was the first time an international art camp was held on Maldivian shores, and it is the plan of UAM to make the camp an annual event.
